The CFTC's Division of Market Oversight has flagged 'mention' contracts in prediction markets as susceptible to manipulation. These contracts, which involve specific actions of named individuals, are now under scrutiny following recent regulatory actions.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) staff advisory indicates that prediction market contracts that depend on whether a named individual performs certain actions, such as speaking or appearing in public, should be considered presumptively manipulable. This category, known as mention markets, includes contracts related to attendance, handshakes, photographs, and social media interactions. Unlike traditional event contracts that settle on outcomes beyond individual control, mention markets rely on the actions of specific persons, which may not be independently verifiable.
