SoftBank, Sony, Honda, and NEC have launched a new company to create a trillion-parameter AI model focused on robotics and machines, supported by $6.7 billion in government funding. The initiative aims to advance 'Physical AI' technologies.
The newly formed company, which translates to 'Japan AI Foundation Model Development,' will focus on developing AI systems that control machinery rather than engage in conversation. SoftBank and NEC will lead the AI development, while Honda will implement the technology in autonomous driving, and Sony will contribute its expertise in robotics and gaming hardware. The company plans to hire around 100 AI engineers, with a SoftBank executive appointed as president.
