Scammers are impersonating Iranian authorities to demand cryptocurrency payments from shipping companies for transit through the Strait of Hormuz. The fraudulent messages promise safe passage amid ongoing regional tensions.
According to Greek maritime risk firm MARISKS, unknown actors have been sending messages to shipping companies demanding payments in Bitcoin and Tether's USDT stablecoin for transit clearance. The messages claim that after assessing eligibility, the Iranian Security Services will determine the cryptocurrency fee required for vessels to transit the strait without issues. This scam emerges as the conflict between Iran and the United States continues.
